Alexander Albon was happy to mock Alpine over their Oscar Piastri mess as Williams confirmed a new contract for the British-Thai racer.
Williams teased the F1 world with a statement earlier on Wednesday that they would be making an announcement at 3pm. It caused many to speculate that they could reveal their intention to sign Piastri, after his shock rejection of the vacant Alpine seat the day before.
The Australian had revealed that news in a tweet – the wording of which Albon copied as his own future was secured. "I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year," he wrote. "This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year."
Piastri himself saw the funny side of the joke, as he responded by congratulating Albon on his new contract. "Congrats mate," he wrote, before adding a GIF with the caption: "Well done sir, that was very good".
Williams' announcement confirms at least one of their drivers beyond the end of the year. Albon has performed well in a struggling car so far in 2022, and has done enough to earn a new "multi-year" deal confirming his place on the grid until at least the end of 2024.
"I am really excited to be staying with Williams Racing for 2023 and look forward to seeing what we can achieve as a team in the remainder of this season and next year," said the former Red Bull driver. "The team has made some strong gains this year and it's exciting to continue this journey and further develop our learnings together."
Jost Capito, Williams team principal, added: "Alex is a tremendous driver and valued member of Williams Racing, so we're thrilled to be able to confirm we will be working with him on a long-term basis.
"Alex brings a great blend of skill and insightful learnings that will help bring the team greater success in the future. He's a fierce competitor, has proved a popular and loyal team member and we are delighted that he will provide a stable base for us to continue to develop in this new F1 car era."
The identity of Williams' other driver in 2023, however, remains a mystery. Nicholas Latifi's future is under threat after underwhelming performances, and the Canadian is expected to be replaced. Mercedes reserve Nyck de Vries is among the favourites along with F2 racer Logan Sargeant, though Piastri is a possibility as Williams and Alpine were working on a loan-style deal before Fernando Alonso announced his Aston Martin move.
