Date revealed for Alex Salmond memorial service

DETAILS for Alex Salmond’s memorial service have been released.

The service will be held at Edinburgh’s St Giles' Cathedral on St Andrew's Day - Saturday, November 30.

Friends and family said the service would allow people to say farewell and reflect on his life and achievements.

A family spokesman told The Sunday Times: "Friends of Alex, who knew and worked with him for many years, are providing support at the family's request in helping to organise a fitting memorial service for the former first minister.

"It will be an occasion for people to say farewell to Alex and reflect on his life and achievements."

Invitations to the service are expected to be sent out from Monday with John Swinney expected to be in attendance alongside figures from the main political parties of Scotland. Representatives from North Macedonia will also be invited.

Sir Tom Hunter who paid for the flight which brought Salmond home from Macedonia after his death is also expected to pay respects at the service.

Nicola Sturgeon, Salmond's successor as first minister and political rival, is not expected to make an appearance.

Before the gathering, a Mass will be held in St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Cowgate.

A family spokesperson told The Sunday Times: "Friends of Alex, who knew and worked with him for many years, are providing support at the family's request in helping to organise a fitting memorial service for the former first minister.

"It will be an occasion for people to say farewell to Alex and reflect on his life and achievements."

Salmond died at the age of 69 last month of a heart attack in North Macedonia. The former SNP leader, who went on to set up the Alba Party, had been speaking at a conference.

He was laid to rest near his home in Aberdeenshire at a private funeral.
