Alex Rae joins Reading as former Rangers star drafted in to help Paul Ince

Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae has joined Reading as interim assistant manager.

The 52-year-old has been drafted into to help caretaker boss Paul Ince following the dismissal of Veljko Paunovic last week.

Rae, formerly manager at Dundee and St Mirren and now a regular Scottish football pundit, previously worked in the dugout with Ince at Blackpool during the 2013/14 campaign.

They now take charge of the Royals with their EFL Championship status under threat.

The Berkshire club sit 21st in England's second tier and face Birmingham City on Tuesday night - and Rae will join Ince and Mikele Leigertwood in the dugout for a crucial clash.

A club statement said: " Reading Football Club can confirm that former Wolves, Sunderland and Millwall midfielder Alex Rae has joined the club as our new Interim Assistant Manager.

"Rae, 52, will join Paul Ince, Michael Gilkes and Mikele Leigertwood in the Royals dugout tonight for our meeting with Birmingham City at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

"The former Dundee and St. Mirren manager is well known to interim manager Ince, after they played together in midfield for Wolves from 2002 to 2004.

"This isn't the first time Ince and Rae will have worked together as management staff either, Rae assisted the former-England captain during his time as boss of Blackpool during the 2013-14 season.

"As a player, Rae racked up 585 appearances during a career spanning 23 years. A Scottish Premier League winner in 2005, twice promoted from England's First Division with Sunderland and Wolves, we'd like to extend a warm welcome to Alex!

"We would also like to take this opportunity to wish Marko Mitrovic, Nuno Gomes and Quinton Fortune all the best for the future and thank them for their hard work following their departure from the club."
