Alex Neil coy on reports linking him with Sunderland's head coach vacancy

Alex Neil is remaining coy over links with the head coach vacancy at Sunderland - with the former Preston and Norwich City boss refusing to public rule himself in or out of the running.

The Black Cats are looking for a replacement for Lee Johnson, who was sacked last weekend, and Roy Keane is currently the favourite to take on the role and make a return to Wearside 13 years after his first stint as manager came to an end.

But Keane is only one of several candidates interviewed, with former Hull City boss Grant McCann also holding talks while other names linked with the post including ex-Nottingham Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi and former Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock.

Asked by Sky Sports News about reports that he is in the running, Neil was non-committal: "I am not quite sure.

"They are going through their process.

"Your name gets bandied about with a lot of jobs from time to time.

"Things should become clearer over the next few days."

Neil began his managerial career with Hamilton Academical and led the club to promotion to the Scottish Premiership via the play-offs in his first season in charge.

He moved on to take charge at Norwich in January 2015, and led the Canaries to promotion to the Premier League that season - again via the play-offs - but could not keep them in the top flight and Neil was sacked in March 2017 with the club eighth in the Championship.

Neil took over at Preston in the summer of 2017 following the departure of Simon Grayson, who was appointed manager of Sunderland.

He left Deepdale in March last year, since when he has undertaken media work and was also given an advisory role by Crewe boss David Artell, who was a former teammate of Neil's at Mansfield.
