Alex McLeish slams Rangers European 'embarrassment' but uses Celtic mauling as guide to big picture

Alex McLeish has slammed Rangers' 7-1 defeat to Liverpool as humiliating - but they aren't the only side to have suffered that fate.

Jurgen Klopp's men ran up six second half goals - including a hat-trick by substitute Mo Salah - in a brutal showing at Ibrox from Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side, who had their exit from the Champions League with two games to go in Group A confirmed on Tuesday night. But it was only in 2017 that Brendan Rodgers' all-conquering Celtic side lost 7-1 at the hands of PSG in Paris.

What it shows former Rangers and Scotland boss McLeish is that teams from the Scottish Premiership can't cope with the step up in class when it comes to European football. He told Football Insider : "You have to account for the quality that came on for Liverpool in the second half. I look back at previous Champions League games from Rangers and Celtic.

"Brendan Rodgers was doing the quadruple but they conceded seven against PSG. I’m not having a go at Celtic but the quality when these teams are at it, it’s levels above where Celtic and Rangers are.

“Rangers got to half time and then they bring on Mo Salah, they had players on the bench to bring on who were absolutely frightening.

“On comes Salah and he gets one of the quickest hattricks ever. It is embarrassing to lose that game by that kind of margin at your home ground. But, again, Liverpool finally found their form at the wrong time for Rangers.”
