Cardiff's sold-out Laundry Quarter development is almost complete, with all houses and apartments on the site to be occupied by the end of November. The site has been developed on what was previously a laundrette that served the Pontcanna area for over 160 years.
Seven out of the nine retail spaces have been filled, including a double unit by artisan baker Alex Gooch. Comprising of 34 homes, including 16 houses and 18 apartments, as well as the retail units, the development sold out months ahead of its completion date. There are now just two retail spaces left to fill. Based just off Romilly Crescent, Peter Reilly, director of developers Portabella, said that he wanted the development to feel part of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Permission was granted to re-develop the area in February 2020, however, due to the pandemic there was a six-moth delay in beginning construction. Mr Reilly previously said that this gave developers time to “fine-tune the details and get everything as good as everything can be.”

The site has been left open for pedestrians and cyclists to travel through and access the shops and cafes that will form part of the site. The new development provides short rows of four and five-bedroom houses and includes off-road parking.
Portabella has confirmed that artisan baker, Alex Gooch, will occupy a double unit at the site, with clothing shop Cwfl also opening up in a unit. Another major tenant is also lined up, subject to a licensing application, Portabella has said, and would offer coffee, breakfast, wine, and small plate options if successful. All residential properties will be occupied by the end of the year, and Portabella are still welcoming enquiries to fill the remaining units.
Mr Reilly said: "All of the properties at Laundry Quarter are sold with about 90% occupied and the rest due to take occupation before Christmas. It's so good to see the development come to fruition and all be brought to life. We've got some really exciting independent local businesses about to start trading here too and we're excited to see the extra energy that these will bring to the neighbourhood. It's going to be a real destination."
