CHICAGO _ Let's see now, there were no short-handed goals, and nobody scored on a penalty shot.
Other than that, this game had pretty much everything.
There were power-play goals, a hat trick, a nine-goal first period, both teams pulled their starting goalies, and, for the first time in an NHL game, Dominik Kahun was called for a penalty.
But most importantly, the Blackhawks came away with a victory, outlasting the Senators 8-7 on Monday night at the United Center to move within one point of the Western Conference's final playoff spot.
Alex DeBrincat's fourth career hat trick sparked his first five-point game, and Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists to extend both of his impressive streaks.
Kane has a point in 18 consecutive games and an assist in 17 straight, tying him with Wayne Gretzky, Adam Oates and Paul Coffey for the sixth-longest assist streak in league history. Gretzky holds the record with 23 straight games with an assist.
The Senators got a power play with 1 minute, 40 seconds left in the game and pulled their goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage but couldn't get the equalizer.
The wild first period began with the Senators taking a 2-0 lead in 2:40 on goals by Bobby Ryan and Rudolfs Balcers. The Hawks answered with a quick pair of their own, both by DeBrincat in a span of 1:13 to tie the score 5:07 into the game.
After the Senators went back up at the 8:05 mark, Hawks coach Jeremy Colliton yanked goalie Collin Delia _ who allowed three goals on 10 shots _ in favor of Cam Ward, and that seemed to do the trick. The Hawks scored twice in less than a minute on goals by Kane and Dylan Strome for a 4-3 lead. The Senators pulled their goalie at that point, removing Anders Nilsson in favor of Craig Anderson.
That didn't work out as well. Less than two minutes later, Brandon Saad made it 5-3 on his 20th goal.
The Senators scored late in the first period and early in the second to tie the score at 5, but DeBrincat's third goal of the game and Gustav Forsling's third of the season restored the Hawks' two-goal lead.
Jonathan Toews added a power-play goal, his 28th of the season, to make it 8-5. The Senators scored twice in the third to pull within a goal.
