Alex Cochrane clears up his Hearts confusion at Motherwell and admits it 'summed up our day'

Alex Cochrane has moved to clear up his Hearts confusion at Motherwell by admitting 'that's something I've never seen before.'

Robbie Neilson moved to try get his Jambos back in the game by making a triple change on the hour in a bid to spark much-needed life into his side. Cochrane's No19 shirt initially went up and he walked off the pitch at the nearest point at Fir Park whilst clapping the huge travelling support.

However, it was meant to be 29 with the Hearts star oblivious to what was going on. As he continued walking off the pitch skipper Lawrence Shankland shouted his name to get back on the field. The moment of chaos summed up an afternoon to forget for the Gorgie outfit with the versatile star admitting to getting some pelters off his team-mates for the error.

Speaking to Edinburgh Evening News, he said: “That's something I've never seen before. It summed up our day, I think.

“My number did go up. They meant to put 29 up but 19 actually went up. I was oblivious to it, just walking off the pitch, and then I heard Shanks call my name to go back on. It's something I've never seen in football before - being subbed off then subbed back on again.”

On the error and if he got a little bit of stick, he said: “A little bit, yeah. A little bit of laughter."

On the loss at Fir Park, he added: “It wasn't the best performance from us, we know that as a team and we spoke about it. We need to win these games if we want to be in that third position. It wasn't a good day for us.

"We have to dust ourselves down and go again. We've got next weekend off, then we've got a big game against St Johnstone, then Celtic back-to-back. There are big games coming up for us.

“We never thought third place was done and dusted, there are still plenty games to go in the season. Yes, it's five points. It's a gap but we need to make sure we keep that gap. We've got big games coming up so we need to make sure we are right at it.”
