Aleksander Ceferin tells Scotland trips to Brazil and Argentina are on the table amid Nations League shake-up

Aleksander Ceferin has put the Tartan Army on standby that trips to Brazil, Argentina and Chile could be coming amid a shake-up of the UEFA Nations League.

Scotland will face Ukraine, Ireland and Armenia in their current Nations League tournament from June onwards, although the dates are subject to change after the World Cup play-off, semi-final, also against Ukraine, was pushed back to the summer.

Polish legend and UEFA vice-president Zbigniew Boniek revealed last year that the 10 South American nations would be allowed entry into the 2024 Nations League because there were very few friendlies now and matches between countries from the two continents are rare.

And Ceferin, in an interview with a Brazilian newspaper, has put Scotland fans on alert for future away trips to the likes of Brazil and Argentina.

He said: "I can't give you too many details right now about South American teams in our Nations League, but it's doable for sure.

"You know, after the creation of the Nations League, European teams don't play so many friendlies anymore. Big teams miss playing against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

"They tell us they would like to play them. That would be a very good thing, but we're not at the point of sharing that with the public yet.

"It's difficult for South American teams when they play European teams in the World Cup because it's a different style of play. And you are only ten teams in South America, we are 55, so we have more quality selections.

"Perhaps this is one of the reasons why European football has been dominating the World Cups since 2006."
Boniek said last year: "From 2024 CONMEBOL will join the Nations League. We do not know yet in what formula, in what form,

"We signed a memorandum about cooperation between CONMEBOL and UEFA and from 2024 these teams will play in the Nations League."

Scotland last played in Rio and Buenos Aires as part of a 1977 South American tour when they gained a 1-1 draw at Boca Juniors' La Bombonera stadium and lost 2-0 at the Maracana.
