Alejandro Garnacho reacts to Lisandro Martinez celebration after Manchester United star's World Cup win

Manchester United players have jumped onto social media to send congratulatory messages to Lisandro Martinez after he won the World Cup with Argentina on Sunday afternoon.

Argentina reigned supreme following the most pulsating showpiece against France which needed to be settled by penalties after a show-stopping 120 minutes. Lionel Messi inspired the South Americans as he had done throughout the tournament with two goals and by netting from 12 yards in the shootout.

Martinez was not required in the final as he remained an unused substitute on the bench. However, the £46million signing from Ajax did play four matches in Qatar.

It was a truly memorable afternoon and night for the 24-year-old as Martinez and Argentina continue to celebrate their third World Cup triumph. But with domestic resumption around the corner for those playing in elite European divisions, heroic players will soon have to return to their day jobs.

Martinez finds himself as the pride at Carrington and beyond, while United teammates such as Alejandro Garnacho - who was overlooked for the Argentina squad despite his breakthrough season - continue to send in their messages to the popular ex-Ajax defender. Several have commented on his Instagram profile.

Captioning an image showing him kissing the World Cup, Martinez said: "Everyone's biggest dream. Champions of the world. Argentina. Argentina. F***."

Garnacho responded with 'smiling face with heart eyes' emojis, while Uruguay prospect Facundo Pellistri promptly shared his delight after featuring in Qatar himself. He wrote: "Congratulations crack! You deserve it."

United midfielder Scott McTominay uploaded his own Instagram story featuring Martinez holding the golden prize. He said: "Congratulations my brother."

Bruno Fernandes did similar. He added: "Congratulations butcher!"
