Aleix Espargaro gets involved in cycling alongside Honda test role

MotoGP race winner Aleix Espargaro will make a switch to professional cycling following his retirement from motorcycle racing.

The Spaniard, a three-time race winner in the premium category, will join the Lidl-Trek professional cycling team from the start of 2025.

Espargaro has been an avid cycling fan for nine years since a back injury meant he had to stop running, switching to riding to train and stay in shape.

Espargaro will work with Lidl-Trek as an ambassador, joining the team at "some of the most prestigious events on the calendar", according to the squad.

The former Aprilia rider finished 11th in this year's MotoGP standings, having announced his retirement from the series in May.

"I decided to step away from MotoGP earlier than planned to join a programme which aligns so well with my passion," Espargaro said.

"I'm deeply grateful to Lidl-Trek for welcoming me to their family and supporting me. I'll give it everything I have.

"Living in Andorra, I made friendships with many pro cyclists, which inspired me to train at a higher level."

Espargaro started in 255 MotoGP races, making him the rider with the second most starts only behind Valentino Rossi.

Alongside his cycling role, the Spaniard will also work as Honda's test rider in MotoGP.

"Working with Aleix will be incredibly rewarding for us, and especially for our young riders," said Lidl-Trek general manager Luca Guercilena.

"We know he is a strong, passionate cyclist, but he also brings different experiences and perspectives to the team. He can help our younger athletes understand and handle the pressures that come with top level competition."
