For some, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a glass of bubbly, and with prosecco being many people’s tipple of choice, it was only a matter of time until major retailers cottoned on.
Now, Aldi has done just that by launching a six-litre bottle of prosecco, which is the equivalent to eight regular-sized bottles.
The budget supermarket’s festive offering contains enough prosecco to fill 48 glasses, at a standard measure of 125ml.
The bottle, named Methuselah of Giotti Spumante Prosecco, costs £79.99, which works out as £1.66 per glass.
It’s described as a “sweet” and “creamy” drink with fruity flavours, such as lemon zest, tangerine and pear.
Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, comments: “Christmas is a time when we know our shoppers come together with their friends and family to share a quality glass of fizz.
"As ever, sparkling wine is incredibly important in the run up to the festive season, so we wanted to give them something bigger and better than ever.”
Naturally, the supersize bottle, which is on sale now, is causing quite the stir among prosecco fans on social media.
“Aldi have launched a 6 LITRE bottle of prosecco, we all know I hate Aldi but omg, this might have changed my mind [sic],” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another said it would be the “perfect start” to Christmas morning.
One person has already got their hands on a bottle, posting a clip of her trying to lift it up and drink from it on Twitter.
Unsurprisingly, the giant bottle appears to be rather heavy.
Prosecco has surged in popularity in the UK in recent years, with customers praising its lighter flavour and more affordable price point in comparison to champagne.
Earlier this month, Good Housekeeping voted a £7 bottle by Morrisons as the best sparkling wine under £15 in supermarkets.
In a blind taste test, the winning Spumante prosecco received an 81/100 rating and was topped only by Laborie Méthode Cap Classique Blanc de Blancs Brut 2010, which received 82 points and is available from Amazon.
