Aldi has submitted its plans for a new store and houses creating up to 40 jobs.
The award winning discount retailer’s vision is to build the shop in North Shields on the site of Tynemouth Court nursing home, which was demolished in 2017.
The proposals are for the vacant plot of land off Hawkeys Lane, redeveloped into a modern store with customer parking and landscaping and outline consent for housing.
Aldi’s proposal would deliver a multi-million pound investment in the area, and creating 40 full time jobs in the store.
If the plans go ahead the shop will be open 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and for six hours between 10am and 6pm on Sunday.
The German retailer has also asked for permission for between 18 and 24 houses to the north of the land.
According to a planning statement submitted to the council by agent KLR Planning, these new homes could be for the elderly, because of its closeness to the town centre and medical facilities.
It said: "Given the location adjacent to the school, medical facilities and close proximity to the town centre, higher density housing or a form of sheltered housing for the elderly could be appropriate."
Aldi currently has stores in Whitley Bay , Howdon and Backworth, and they say the supermarket would give North Shields shoppers greater choice.
Previously, a spokesperson for the chain said: "This site is ideally placed to serve local residents closer to their homes."
The planning document claims that 422 people responded to a consultation on the plans, with 82% being in favour.
North Tyneside Council's planning committee will decide on the scheme by early January.
