Aldi store to close until next year as building 'no longer fit for purpose'

A Merseyside Aldi will be shutting its doors for almost a year on Christmas Eve.

Aldi Prenton is "no longer fit for purpose" according to a spokesperson for the discount supermarket, and will be closing from Saturday, December 24 to be reopened at an unconfirmed date in November 2023. The building is almost 40 years old and has now "reached the end of its operational life."

The building, operated by Aldi for around 12 years now, will be rebuilt and replaced with a newer, energy efficient and more modern store, with more floor space and wider aisles. A larger car park will also be constructed with space for 125 vehicles.

A new access point will also be created, to allow access to the store from Woodchurch Road. Aldi said the modernisation plans will also introduce 10 new full and part time roles at the store, and will help to protect existing jobs.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: "Having been part of the community for 12 years, we are delighted to be redeveloping our existing food store to improve our offering. The plans represent our commitment to long-term investment in Prenton.”

"The existing store is no longer fit for purpose, as such more space is required to improve customer experience and continue to deliver the high standards our customers have come to expect.”

"We look forward to welcoming our loyal customers back through the doors in November 2023."

Plans for the store rebuild were previously met with controversy as the redevelopment meant two existing tenants, Home Bargains and Vets 4 Pets, would be effectively booted out of the building as their tenancies would be ended.
