Aldi shoppers divided over huge change to its stores

Aldi shoppers have been left divided over a huge change to its supermarket checkouts.

The budget retailer is a favourite with many shoppers, and has gained even more fans in recent months amid the cost of living crisis. A growing number of people are turning to Aldi in a bid to save money on their weekly shops.

In fact, there's even a Facebook group for fans of the supermarket giant, boasting more than 260,000 members.

One Facebook user took to the group to bemoan the fact their local store doesn't have self checkouts. It comes after Aldi introduced self-service checkouts in a number of its shops earlier this year.

The customer said: "I know Aldi have already installed self checkouts in some places but they need to get with the times and install at least a couple in each stores."

Many others agreed with the shopper. One woman said: "I love a self checkout, it's easier for me as I am disabled. Nobody is rushing me, but it's still quick."

A second said: "They’re great. Work well if you want to grab a few bits. In and out. If you got trolleys or want to use a till there’s one open", and a third said: "I use them all the time. I haven't got time to wait behind rows of trolleys. I'm in and out so fast its great."

A fourth said: "Good for when you have 1-5 items and don’t want to wait in massive queues with people who have large amounts of shopping ."

But other shoppers were against the self checkouts. One woman said: "No please do not put these in stores it’s ok for young folk but older people like to go through checkout", while a second said: "No I hate them always something goes wrong! Just need checkouts just for people with baskets instead, people who only have a few items."

A third said: "They are more hassle to use, you need staff to take off alcohol tabs, you need staff to check ID. If it won't scan you need staff, if your cash is crumpled you need staff, if you accidently scan it twice you need staff", and a fourth added: "I hate them, but if I had a £1 for every time I've gone in for 4 items and I've had to walk out without them as I couldn't face the monster queues I'd be rich."

An Aldi spokesperson told the ECHO : "All Aldi stores have checkouts which are operated by our amazing colleagues. In addition, we currently have a number of stores that have the option of self-checkouts for those customers that prefer to use them.”
