An Aldi customer was left dumbstruck by a cashier's response to a pensioner who was left £1 short at the checkout.
The heartwarming encounter took the shopper aback and prompted her to share it online.
Roné Bouwer Baxendell recalled how the elderly woman appeared to keep tabs on her shopping total as the items were scanned through the till.
When she came up short, the Aldi worker stepped in to help and offered to pay the remainder, reports Manchester Evening News.
Writing on social media, Ms Baxendell wrote: "Today at my local Aldi in Towcester, there was an elderly lady in front of me, keep checking how much she’s spending.
"Long story short, the amount came to over what she had and asked for certain items to be credited off.
"The Aldi cashier turned around and said it’s only £1 something over, I’ll pay it for you."
Overcome with emotion, Ms Baxendell praised the staff member for her selfless gesture when she took her turn at the till.
"When it was my turn I said 'what a lovely thing to do' and the reply was 'we are all battling at the moment and we need to eat'," she added.
"You want to know why my Aldi is special and why I go there, this is why."
More and more Brits are struggling to pay their bills amid the rising cost of living and record high inflation rates.
Many have been left strapped for cash at the supermarket, with the price of daily essentials on the rise.
Aldi has promised shoppers it will continue to offer the lowest food prices in the UK to help households get by amid soaring living costs.
But the checkout worker went the extra mile at the Northamptonshire store and personally offered to help a customer in need.
Many took to social media to praise her efforts and share similar experiences at the supermarket.
Beth Cornish said: "We do this at work too sadly it is becoming more regular and it is heart breaking.
"We actually had an elderly customer a couple of weeks ago in tears as the price of eggs had gone up and she couldn't afford half a dozen eggs.
"Another customer bought them for her and then brought it to our attention, there are many angels out there and trust me we can tell the fraudsters."
Michelle Walden said: "I’ve had a cashier pay what I couldn’t once before. Not many people like that around anymore. There are a few good people out there."
Susan Pasfield Hook commented: "That was a very nice thing for that cashier to do and I applaud her for it. But, that was the lady doing that kindness not Aldi."
Linda Needham said: "That's so kind of the cashier we are all finding it hard at the moment well done Aldi."
