Aldi has committed £35m, including a £10m spend to open two new stores in Cumbernauld and Coatbridge, to further expand its Scottish portfolio.
The supermarket chain is also putting an additional £5m into upgrading existing stores under its Project Fresh initiative. The new layouts should give increased space for the retailer’s Scottish range, including fresh meat and fish, bread and cakes, beers and spirits, as well as an improved Food to Go section.
Aldi is also investing £20m to prepare for the roll out of the Deposit Return Scheme. The Scottish Government scheme will launch in August, aiming to make sure billions of single-use plastic bottles and cans are disposed of responsibly.
Aldi stated that it continues to support Scottish food and drink producers, with 25% of its range now locally sourced in Scotland.
Recent Kantar data also showed that Aldi was the third largest retailer by volume in Scotland.
Richard Holloway, regional managing director at Aldi Scotland, said: “As we look to the New Year, our growth plan continues to be realised, with more stores and further investment in Scotland to reach more customers than ever before.’’
Aldi currently has 104 stores in Scotland, after investing £24m in three new sites last year, including two in Aberdeen and one in Broxburn; which created 150 jobs.
The retailer currently employs 3,500 people in Scotland.
