Aldi has left social media in stitches after extending an olive branch to a well known adversary - Marks and Spencer. The supermarkets have most notably butt heads in the "Caterpillar War".
The conflict began when Aldi released their controversial Cuthbert The Caterpillar cake back in 2019. As Marks and Spencer have sold their Colin The Caterpillar cake for decades, both companies became entangled in a legal battle.
Despite the case being settled in 2021, Aldi have been known to take cheeky swipes at M&S on social media and even referenced their argument in their most recent Christmas advertisement campaign.
Now in a surprising turn of events, the budget supermarket decided to bury the hatchet. As September 21 happens to be International Day of Peace, the business took to Twitter to send M&S a message.
The post read: "We are using this International Day of Peace to extend our antennae out to @marksandspencer."
Social media users were amused by the tweet and praised Aldi's social media team. One person said: "Cuthbert vs Colin will be at war for all eternity and I'm absolutely living for it."
Another replied: "May Colin and Cuthbert can do the same. That's very decent of @AldiUK considering how horrible @marksandspencer have been to you, and love the way Aldi hand M&S their a*** on a plate every single time, your Social Media team at Aldi are absolutely brilliant!"
Adding a heart emoji, one person suggested: "Maybe both collaborate and make a butterfly cake all profits go to a mutual charity."
The so-called Caterpillar War was settled between the supermarkets this past February. Details of the settlement are limited, but Aldi's cake made a return to shelves in June.
Aldi announced the relaunch by parking trucks with a "#Cuthback" advert outside M&S locations. The chain also tweeted: "Where else would we announce it? #CuthBack."
