Aldi's 52p ketchup beats Heinz in blind taste test

Aldi’s own-brand ketchup, Bramwells, raced to the top of the leader board during a recent blind taste test, beating household heavyweight Heinz.

The supermarket's condiment is priced at a budget-friendly price of 52p, making it five times cheaper than the leading brand's condiment, which costs £2.80.

Condiment queen and Yorkshire Live reporter Helen Whitehouse, tasted a total of five brands served up by her housemate so she wouldn't be able to see the bottle labels.

Each sauce was tasted with a vegetarian chicken nugget, allowing an additional nugget in between tastes as a palette cleanser.

The sauces included in the taste test were Heinz, Aldi, M&S, Yorkshire brand Catherine's Choice and Morrisons.

Speaking of Aldi’s winning formula, Helen said: “The 'dipability' was excellent, I imagine it could be done one-handed - which is good for a woman who needs to multi-task, like myself.”

“It also tasted really nice, was quite sweet but had the perfect vinegary mix too”.

While being awarded the same amount of points, Heinz was described as being ‘a bit oily’ and not looking ‘as glossy or as appetising’, leading Helen to claim the Aldi brand as the ‘favourite’.

Coming joint third was Marks & Spencers’ own branded ketchup – described as ‘a tad grainy and duller on the plate’

Morrisons’ 32p came after M&S, which the taster claimed was ‘a bit thin’ and took and ‘a fair bit of scooping onto the nugget’.

Yorkshire brand, Catherine's Choice took last place.
