Aldi reveals three Scottish locations where new stores could open - full list of 30 spots

Scots may see some new Aldi stores popping up over the next year, as the budget supermarket has said that it wants to open 40 new branches.

Aldi has released a list of 30 possible locations where it would like to set up shop - including three spots in Scotland - and are even willing to pay a finders fee to those who recommend potential sites.

The Scottish locations in which the supermarket said it would like to open stores are Cathcart, Drylaw and Bonnyrigg. The chain currently has more than 990 stores in the UK, but they are planning to invest more than £400million on store development.

It is looking for freehold town centre or edge-of-town sites near a main road that are around 1.5 acres. The site would ideally accommodate a 20,000 square foot store with around 100 parking spaces, reports the Mirror.

Agents who recommend a site could earn either 1.5 percent of a freehold price that the supermarket pays or 10 percent of the first year’s rent for leasehold sites.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer at Aldi UK, said: "Demand for Aldi has never been higher but there are still some towns and areas that either don’t have access to an Aldi or have capacity for additional stores.

“To meet that demand, we need to open more stores and it’s our mission to keep driving our ambitious expansion plan to achieve that.”

Aldi's plan for 40 new stores this year is set to create around 6,000 new jobs in the UK. Aldi said the reason for the openings comes after the demand for budget groceries has "never been higher".
