Aldi has confirmed its latest North East supermarket will open within weeks in Newcastle.
The growing discount retailer will open its brand new store at Kingston Park, following a speedy project which was completed and handed over by construction company Tolent before it fell into administration. The Gateshead contractor, which called in administrators two weeks ago, secured the £2.1m deal last summer to build the new 14,000sqft retail store for developers The Hanro Group.
The new store has created 39 jobs and the firm is seeking applications for the store positions now. The store – built following the demolition of buildings which housed businesses including Peacock and Poundstretcher stores and Luciano’s Italian Restaurant – opens on Kingston Park Avenue in Newcastle on March 16 at 8am.

To celebrate the official partnership between Aldi and ParalympicsGB, Aldi area manager Nathan Smith and his team will be joined by ParalympicsGB gold medallist Jack Smith to celebrate the store opening by cutting the all-important ribbon on opening morning. They will also give away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in the queue.
Mr Smith said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Newcastle. It’s set to be a special day, and having Paralympic hero Jack Smith join us will make it a morning to remember.”
Wheelchair Rugby star Jack Smith added: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store; it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of ParalympicsGB.”
The new Aldi store is also calling on local charities and food banks in Newcastle to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community.
Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner up with the new Aldi store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.
