Aldi releases special edition gin with glitter to mark Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Aldi has released a new gin to mark the Queen's 70 years on the throne. The spirit will hit the shelves in May as a commemoration of Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee.

The supermarket has launched a limited edition variant of its Infusionist Gin range. The spirit will be flavoured with strawberry and mint, and will also feature glitter in the liquid.

It will come in a patriotic red, white and blue bottle. It is set to go on sale on May 16, just in time for gin-lovers to stock up ahead of the four day bank holiday weekend from June 2 - June 5, Chronicle Live reports.

Aldi has called the drink a perfect centrepiece for street and garden parties, adding that at £13.99 for 700ml, it is £2 cheaper than the equivalent at M&S. The tipple, which is described as shimmering, aims to pay "tribute to Britain's longest-reigning monarch."

Buckingham Palace in fact has its own line of gin made using botanicals from the royal garden. The Queen herself is said to enjoy a gin and Dubonnet.

Aldi said: "It seems only right to launch a special jubilicious tipple in commemoration of the historical anniversary. Encapsulating the taste of a picture-perfect British summer, the new liqueur boasts flavours of jammy British strawberries, with a hint of mint to balance."

And it recommends that the best way to serve it is as a 'classic Jubilee G&T' with tonic, a garnish of orange and plenty of ice. Aldi’s new British Strawberry & Mint Gin Liqueur will go on sale from May 16 and the store says that - as with all its 'Specialbuys' - "once they’re gone, they’re gone".

Queen Elizabeth has made history by becoming the first British monarch to mark a platinum jubilee. She is now the longest-reigning monarch in British history, and the longest-reigning currently sitting monarch.

She surpassed the previous holder of the title, Queen Victoria, in 2015. Victoria reigned for 63 years and 216 days.

If Elizabeth is still on the throne in 2024, she will surpass Louis XIV of France. Louis XIV reigned for 73 years and 110 days from 1643 to 1715.

The official date of Elizabeth's 70th anniversary on the throne was on February 6. However, the celebrations were pushed back as a mark of respect for Elizabeth's father who died on that date.
