Aldi recalls summer Specialbuy furniture item due to design fault that could cause injury

Aldi has issued a recall notice on an outdoor furniture item in its popular Specialbuys range, warning that a fault with its design could lead to shoppers sustaining an injury.

The supermarket has advised all customers who bought the Adventuridge Portable Hammock with Stand to return the product to their nearest store to receive a full refund. The hammock, which is now listed as ‘no longer available’ on Aldi’s website, was priced at £44.99 and was available in either green or blue.

Aldi has informed customers that the hammock has a “design defect” that can cause the seam at the head end of the fabric to split after limited use. "We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your cooperation," the retailer added.

Aldi said that the hammock has now been removed from sale in every store and they are recalling all that have been sold this year, but pointed out that similar products sold in previous years “are not affected”. The product code for the faulty hammock to check on your receipt is 816216.

Prior to being pulled from sale, the hammock received several one-star reviews on Aldi’s website with multiple shoppers complaining that it had arrived broken. “Both hammocks were damaged on arrival - plastic feet and pieces were loose in the bag,” one person complained.

And at least one reviewer appeared to have been affected by the “design defect” that prompted the recall. “The stitching where the poles slide through is poor, one end has split and the other is starting to go after using it twice,” they wrote.

“It is a shame as the hammock was comfortable, just not very well made,” the shopper added. “If the stitching had gone totally whilst using , I would have a very painful back as I would have landed on the metal frame below.”
