Aldi, Morrisons and Sainsbury's set to close hundreds of stores this Easter

Three UK supermarkets have confirmed they will close hundreds of stores on Easter Sunday this year.

Sainsbury's will pull down shutters on 600 of its big stores in England and Wales, while Aldi will do the same across 890 stores.

Morrisons will also close its bigger supermarkets on Easter Sunday, which falls on April 9.

The Mirror has asked Morrisons how many stores it has in England and Wales.

Under UK Law in England and Wales, stores which are larger than 280 square metres have to close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

But smaller convenience stores don't have to shut.

The rules are also different in Scotland where larger businesses are able to remain open.

All supermarkets across the UK will be open as usual on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Monday.

Usually, larger Sainsbury's stores are open from around 6am to 11pm - however, this does vary across the country.

Before heading down you should check your local's openings times and you can do this by using Sainsbury's store locator on its website.

In our research, most Morrisons stores across the UK will be open from around 7am until around 9pm or 10pm at night.

Again, this is just an average and we would advise you to double-check the opening times of your local Morrisons before you head on down.

Other supermarkets are yet to release details of their Easter opening hours, but it's worth checking their websites for updates as we get closer to the holiday.

Co-op closed its larger outlets on Easter Sunday last year, while the smaller convenience stores were operating normal opening hours.

Tesco also shut its bigger stores on Easter Sunday in 2022 and reopened them on Easter Monday, although opening hours varied from branch to branch.

The Mirror has contacted other supermarkets to find out their Easter weekend opening times.

It is always best to plan ahead and stock up for any food you may need over Easter to avoid disappointment.
