Aldi shoppers were in stitches after spotting a sneaky dig at Marks and Spencer in their latest Christmas advert.
The supermarkets went head to head in 2021 after M&S launched legal action against Aldi, claiming the bargain store’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake is too similar to Colin. M&S wanted to pull Cuthbert from shelves after saying the cake infringes the trademark of Colin and "rides on the coat-tails" of its reputation.
The food giant had gone on to claim that the similarity of both products leads customers to believe they are of the same standard. However, it was confirmed a deal had been made, ending the legal dispute.
But in Aldi's Christmas ad, eagle-eyed shoppers were quick to spot a nod to the drama among the clip's festive scenes, reports the Mirror. Stuck home alone, Kevin the Carrot opts to entertain himself by watching a football game.
Viewers would be forgiven for thinking Kevin might be watching a game from the upcoming World Cup, with the teaser for the ad paying homage to the iconic 1998 Nike World Cup Advert.
But when people got a glimpse of Kevin's TV screen, they realised he was watching something quite different. Instead, the carrot was enjoying a match between teams 'Cuth' and 'Col', with Cuth winning 1-0.
In response to the advert, social media users were quick to praise the cheeky detail. One said: "Hang on is that Cuthburt v Colin?" adding a laughing emoji, and another replied: "OMG - yes it is!! Totally missed that." A third said: "Aldi’s Cuthbert 1, (I’m assuming M&S) Colin 0!!! Genius!"
