Aldi mocks M&S with sneaky dig over Coronation Colin the Caterpillar cake

Budget supermarket Aldi has reignited its feud with M&S over their similarly designed caterpillar-themed bakes, by mocking the rival shop's new Coronation Colin the Caterpillar cake.

M&S designed a new version of its popular cake to celebrate King Charles' Coronation - which takes place on May 6 - and the updated sweet treat includes a gold crown on top of Colin's head.

In a hilarious nod to a lawsuit that M&S once brought against Aldi for their Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake, the discount supermarket responded to the new design by joking they'd need to "cancel the crowns" planned for their royal-themed cake.

The comment references a bitter feud that raged between the two supermarkets in 2021, when M&S launched a lawsuit against Aldi in an effort to take Cuthbert off of the shelves.

However, a month after the lawsuit, Cuthbert appeared in Aldi shops once again after undergoing some changes to his chocolate face design.

M&S and Aldi have since settled the copyright row over the designs of the two cakes, but that hasn't stopped Aldi from poking fun at the situation by claiming they'll have to be careful not to do anything that makes Cuthbert too similar to his pricier cousin, Colin.

When Coronation Colin the Caterpillar was announced, an M&S spokesperson said: "To celebrate the coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, we're so excited to share our limited-edition Coronation Colin.

"Who's going to be grabbing one of these ahead of the bank holiday weekend?"

And in a hilarious tweet, Aldi responded: "Cancel the crowns, CANCEL THE CROWNS!"

Fans of Aldi were left in stitches over the tweet, with many praising the shop's social media team for seeing the funny side of their feud with M&S.

One person wrote: "Best social media account ever. I do hope you're ramping up for the occasion."

While another said: "I absolutely love you guys. You make us laugh so much, don't cancel the crowns, just make them bigger and better."

And a third posted: "Aldi, bravo. Your social media team are the ones that deserve a crown."

Coronation Colin the Caterpillar is available now in M&S stores for £10.

But it's not the only supermarket to have released a royal-themed caterpillar cake ahead of the Coronation either, as we recently reported that Asda has brought out a special version of its chocolate log cake named Letty the Coronation Caterpillar.

Priced at £7, the beloved caterpillar comes complete with a crown, purple robe, and patriotic sprinkles to set off the cake, filled with chocolate flavour buttercream.
