Aldi makes big change to essential grocery item across all UK stores

Aldi is rolling out a change across its 990 UK stores in an effort to help the environment.

All milk sold by the retailer will now brand colourless caps to make them easier to recycle. Full fat, skimmed and low fat are distinguishable by their blue, green and red colour caps and this will remain across each types' labels.

The new milk caps have already popped up in stores this week, made in partnership with suppliers. While milk bottle lids are recyclable, the colouring contaminates the material, making it tougher to be reused as food-grade packaging.

Rolling out colourless caps will allow a staggering 200 tonnes of High-Density Polythene (rHDPE) that make up the tops to be reused to make new milk bottles. Aldi bosses hope the change will prompt shoppers to change their recycling habits.

As reported by Wales Online, Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, said: “At Aldi we are constantly reviewing ways to become a more sustainable supermarket and cut down on single-use plastic. That means working closely with our suppliers to find solutions that will make a real difference.

“Improving the recyclability of packaging on an everyday product like milk has been well received by our customers, who are increasingly aware of products being environmentally friendly.”
