Supermarket chain Aldi looks set to open its fifth store in Swansea, with plans in the pipeline to move to Fforestfach Retail Park, close to a huge Tesco Extra.
The German budget supermarket, which already has branches at Parc Tawe, Cwmdu, Gorseinon and Llansamlet, is expected to move into the former New Look store. In June this year, Swansea Council granted planning permission to an applicant known only as the 'UK Warehouse Retail Fund' to reconfigure unit 12, where the fashion store once was, along with unit 13, to create a much larger base.
The authority's planning department has also been asked to approve signage, which reveals Aldi as the new store and includes a bilingual banner which reads "Yn agor cyn hir - Opening soon." It has not yet been revealed when the store will officially open or how many jobs it is set to create. But there will be alterations to access and street furniture to accommodate the new arrival, including the creation of a new trolley bay and a rear extension to form a loading bay.
Aldi is not the only new addition poised to move into the retail park. The go-ahead was recently given for McDonald's to build a new drive-thru restaurant there. Swansea Council's planning committee unanimously approved the scheme at a meeting on June 14 after hearing from officers and asking them questions. It will have a 95-seat ground floor restaurant, outdoor seating area, and employ 65 people. To read more about that, click here.
New Look closed its store at Morfa Retail Park in February after the landlord of the premises decided to exit the lease early. You can learn more about that by clicking here. Aldi has been contacted for comment.
