Aldi Jubilee opening hours slammed by shoppers

Supermarket Aldi has been slammed by shoppers over its opening hours this weekend. The company has faced criticism after it posted its Jubilee bank holiday opening hours online.

Aldi have said that store opening times will remain the same during the Jubilee weekend. It comes after other supermarkets including Asda and Tesco have announced they will be closing at 8pm instead of 12am on Thursday and Friday.

Manchester Evening News reports that Lidl and Sainsburys will be closing at 8pm as well instead of 10pm and that Morrisons will be closing at 10pm as usual.

Aldi's post read: "We're open for the Jubilee Celebration! Make sure you head down to get all your essentials for the weekend! Our normal opening hours will remain in place this Bank Holiday weekend."

The majority of shoppers quickly found an issue with the update, though, and blasted Aldi for not closing stores to give staff a break and the chance to enjoy the Jubilee with family. People did not hold back.

Eleanor Keyes said: "Shame for the staff… not even bank holiday hours. Shame on you… hope it’s double time and a day in lieu." Tracey Cowan wrote: "How lovely would it be for people to get organised and do their food shop on the Wednesday so shops could close for 2 days so staff could join in with the celebrations."

Louise McLean wrote: "Aw give your staff some time off! Misery guts." Julie Edwards simply wrote: "Sad." Some shoppers did, however, point out that not everybody cares about the Jubilee, and that some people are always forced to work Bank Holidays. Mick Dixon said: "Not everyone gives a s*** about the outdated titular and completely useless monarchy. Let them earn a wage if they choose."

Angharad Jayne Walker pointed out: "Love everyone saying for them to close and give their staff the bank holiday off. They aren't the only ones working it. I work every bank holiday and don't get extra pay for it."

An Aldi spokesperson told Manchester Evening News: “All Aldi colleagues working over the bank holiday will get time off in lieu. We are very grateful to everyone at Aldi who is working this weekend to help our customers get everything they need to celebrate the Jubilee."
