New self-scanners have been introduced at an Aldi supermarket in Nottingham - as part of a wider roll-out across the country. Self-service tills were first introduced in Aldi's store in Tamworth in April 2019.
Almost a year later, the machines were introduced at four other stores in England - the nearest to Nottinghamshire at Woodgate in Leicester. At the time, Aldi said the initial stores were involved in a trial - but it was unclear how long the trial would last or which other supermarkets were likely get the new machines.
Since then more and more tills have been rolled out - and in the past few weeks the self-service tills have been introduced at Aldi's Mapperley supermarket in Woodborough Road. Shoppers still have the option to use the staffed checkouts. But supporters say using the self-service scanners typically takes away waiting in queues.

An Aldi spokeswoman said: “Following positive feedback, we’ve extended our trial of self-checkouts to our Mapperley store to further improve customer experience. Checkouts manned by our amazing colleagues will still be available for customers who prefer to use these."
Members of staff monitor the self-service tills and are on hand to provide assistance. Other major supermarket chains have been using self-scanners for years.
In other Aldi news, meanwhile, at the start of the year the retailer opened its first checkout-free supermarket where people can shop without having to scan a product. The 'trial' store in Greenwich, London, allows customers to use a downloadable app which automatically charges for purchases once a customer leaves the store. It follows similar moves by Tesco and Sainsbury's.
