Aldi insider warns shoppers of the dangers of BOGOF deals as she shares money-saving tips

With yearly food shopping bills soaring £380 this year due to the skyrocketing cost of groceries, households across the country are looking for ways to slash the price at the bottom of their supermarket receipts. To help struggling consumers, an Aldi insider has shared five top tips that should come in handy when doing your weekly shop.

Small changes can make a huge difference to shoppers in terms of saving money. Over the four weeks to June 12, grocery price inflation jumped to 8.3%, according to analysts Kantar.

That is an increase on 7% in May and the highest rate since April 2009, reports The Mirror. To help lessen the impact of this increase, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi Julie Ashfield has revealed how shoppers can leave the supermarket with more money in their wallets, purses and pockets than expected.

Beware of BOGOF deals

Julie has warned shoppers of the perils of buy one, get one free deals, which many supermarkets put on, as you should always check you're getting a good deal by comparing prices between supermarkets. You should also make sure that you only buy what you actually need.

She said: "Weigh up first whether the deal is actually worth it, or if you actually need more than one of the product you’re buying. Aldi has no plans to introduce any BOGOF deals."

Keep your eyes peeled for red stickers

Rather than the yellow stickers used by other supermarkets, Aldi uses red stickers to mark down its food. On their last day of life, perishables such as bread, meat, and produce are reduced by 75%.

If the packaging has been damaged, rice, pasta, cereal, and tinned food may also be marked down by 30%. Julie explained: "The times that items are reduced vary by store and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. So be sure to keep an eye out for red stickers next time you’re in Aldi to avoid missing out."

Don't shy away from own-brands

If you only put branded goods in your basket, you may be missing out on products that are a fraction of the price. Julie said: "Most of the products at Aldi are own-brand - and we’ve won hundreds of awards for them this year alone.

"Recent research by Britsuperstore saw Aldi voted the most popular supermarket for affordable own-brand products for UK parents. Aldi also scooped Supermarket of the Year at the 2022 Loved By Parents Awards."

Don't miss out on regular offers

Although Aldi may not offer BOGOF deals, Specialbuy discounts are sometimes applied to everything from electricals to garden furniture within the store. Specialbuy deals are released every Thursday and Sunday.

Customers can keep up to date with Aldi's current and upcoming Specialbuys by signing up to the supermarket's newsletter here. Julie said: "We also have our fortnightly Super 6 deals on seasonal fruit and veg - as well as meat - which are promoted in our leaflets in-store so you can always know what’s coming ahead of time."

Change your supermarket

It does not always pay to be loyal - you could be spending all your money at one supermarket when another offers much better value for money. Make sure you always compare prices online by using comparison websites such as Trolley.co.uk, MySupermarketCompare.co.uk, MySupermarkets.uk, and Priceable.
