Saving on weekly expenses in Ireland has never been more important with the cost of living continuing to rise.
Consumers are actively looking for ways to be smarter with their cash, and the weekly food shop is a great place to start.
General money-saving tips are easy to come by, but knowing some of the inside secrets of how supermarkets work is key to saving serious cash in-store.
According to Group Buying Director at ALDI Ireland, John Curtin, some incredibly small changes can make a big difference to the cost of what’s in your basket each week.
So he gave the Irish Mirror some insider secrets, so customers can be savvy shoppers and could save even more on their next visit.
Beware of BOGOF deals
Some shoppers might have noticed that ALDI doesn’t usually do any ‘buy one get one free’ deals.
If you do see these offers in other shops, weigh up first whether the deal is worth it or if you actually need more than one of the products you’re buying.
ALDI has no plans to introduce any BOGOF deals. Instead, we are committed to simply offering the lowest prices and highest-quality products every single day.
Look out for red stickers
All of ALDI’s 150 Irish stores mark down perishable products such as bread, meat and produce by 30% or 75% on their last day of life, with lots of products suitable for home freezing if you don’t want to eat them right away.
This initiative offers customers even lower prices while cutting back on waste.
The times that items are reduced vary by store and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to keep an eye out for red stickers next time you’re in ALDI to avoid missing out.
Look out for ALDI’s fantastic own-brand products
While it can be tempting to grab the brands you recognise, by ignoring own brands you might be missing out on products that are a fraction of the price.
Most of the products at ALDI are own-brand, and we are proud to boast an award-winning range! Private label has become increasingly popular with Irish shoppers, with 66% of shoppers saying they would swap the branded products in their trollies if a private-label item was cheaper.*
As well as this, ALDI Ireland was named Private Label Retailer of the Year at the 2021 Private Label & Contract Manufacturer Awards, which recognised the success of our premium Specially Selected range.
Stay informed
ALDI might not offer BOGOF deals, but you can still sometimes spot Special buy discounts on anything from electricals to garden furniture.
Keep up to date with current and upcoming Specialbuys by signing up to ALDI’s newsletter here to ensure you always bag the best deals before they get snapped up.
ALDI also has fortnightly Super 6 deals on seasonal fruit and veg, as well as meat and fish which are promoted in leaflets in-store so you can always know what’s coming ahead of time.
And finally… Switch your supermarket
If you’ve only ever done your shop at one supermarket, you might not realise how much money you could be saving elsewhere.
ALDI stocks 1,800 products, with over 200 seasonal products on shelves at any one time, all at an unbeatable value for customers.
Providing the very best food and drink offering in terms of quality, price, and value is our priority, and we remain focused on shielding customers from price increases as much as possible.
This means you could be significantly lowering the cost of your weekly shop without compromising on quality, just by switching supermarkets to ALDI. Changing your supermarket doesn’t mean you have to change your lifestyle.
