Aldi follows Boots and Asda in renaming 'feminine hygiene' aisle

Aldi has followed other big name supermarkets and brands in changing the name of one of their aisles in store.

The german supermarket has renamed their 'feminine hygiene' aisle the 'period products' aisle, following on from Asda and Boots who made the change back in March. The change is being rolled out across all Aldi stores and on its website.

Now, shoppers looking for tampons, towels, panty liners, and similar items will see them in the 'period product' section, the Manchester Evening News reports

Richard Shuttleworth, Diversity and Inclusion Director at Aldi UK, said: "We are pleased to have renamed the category both in-store and online to better reflect how shoppers feel about period products."

Shoppers are divided by the move, with some praising its inclusivity, and others not understanding why the change was needed.

One shopper tweeted: "@AldiUK Please tell my why it's appropriate to change feminine hygiene to "period products". Are you expecting lots of men to rush and buy their tampons from you now? #woman #menstruation #stopbeingwoke"

Another wrote: "Actually many teenagers are embarrassed still about buying them but now men for incontinence pads etc will also have to go down the period products aisle as well as women who don't have periods Why not call it toiletry aisle"

But many others welcomed the changes made by Aldi and Asda.

One tweeted: "Incontinence products are used by all bodies & so shouldn't have been in the "feminine hygiene" section anyway. & feminists have been campaigning against the euphemistic & patriarchal label "feminine hygeine" for years. "period products" is straight to the point & inclusive."

Another agreed: "Well done @asda - changing the language around menstruation, changing the name from 'feminine hygiene products' to 'period products'. A big step forward in tackling the stigma that menstruation is in some way shameful and unhygienic. Let's hope others follow suit!"

A third commented: "I noticed on Asda shopping online the other day that they are now calling it "period products" I was surprised but agree it needs to made to feel less shameful."
