Aldi follows Asda and Boots with feminine hygiene aisle rebrand

Popular retailer Aldi is joining the likes of Boots and Leeds-based Asda in renaming the aisle used for stocking feminine hygiene products. The budget supermarket will be putting up new signage around its stores in July to refer to items such as tampons and panty liners as "period products".

Previously, they had been referred to as "feminine hygiene" products. But earlier this year, Asda changed the wording to period products, receiving praise in doing so.

Shortly after this, Boots took the same tact. Campaigners have welcomed the rebrand as they say using the word "hygiene" implies periods are unhygienic, which adds to a negative stigma around menstruating, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Along with the new signs, Aldi's website has also been updated to correspond with the changes in stores. The move is also seen as helping produce a more inclusive environment, meaning people who have periods but do not necessarily as female - such as trans men - can feel more comfortable shopping along the aisle.

Richard Shuttleworth, diversity and inclusion director at Aldi UK, said: "We are pleased to have renamed the category both in-store and online to better reflect how shoppers feel about period products."
