Aldi confirms second pay rise for thousands of workers as living costs soar

Aldi has confirmed that thousands of workers are set for their second pay rise this year which will see most of their rates at over £12 an hour.

Warehouse workers in the supermarket chain's regional distribution centres across the UK will see their hourly rate increase from £11.95 to £12.66. The increase will come into effect from September and will see Aldi far exceed the National Living Wage of £9.90 an hour.

The German grocer has said that around 4,200 colleagues will benefit from the pay rise and that they will see a 9% increase on their January 2022 rates. Aldi currently operates more than 970 stores and 11 regional distribution centres across Britain.

All warehouse workers who work outside of normal working hours will also have their night premium payments increase from 20% to 25% of their normal hourly rate.

The new rates of pay comes just after Aldi announced that more than 26,000 store colleagues would have their minimum hourly pay increased by 40p starting from September.

All store colleagues will see their hourly rates of pay increase to £10.50 an hour nationally, while those inside the M25 will increase to £11.95 an hour.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This announcement recognises the amazing contribution our logistics colleagues make in serving communities across the country.

“We’re also pleased to be able to increase the night premium we pay to our many colleagues who work so hard to keep our stores well-stocked. Their outstanding efforts help ensure that our customers continue to have access to fresh affordable food, every single day.”

It comes just after the budget supermarket's annual pay review which came into effect from February, which saw pay rates across Aldi’s logistics network increase.

The Daily Record also previously reported that the supermarket chain had announced a major recruitment push with more than 1,000 logistics roles up for grabs back in July.
