Aldi announces return of Cuthbert the Caterpillar with 'legendary' swipe at M&S

Aldi has left shoppers in stitches after announcing the return of their controversial Cuthbert The Caterpillar cake with a "legendary" swipe at M&S.

The budget supermarket's viral chocolate treat is set to make his triumphant return to stores next week after they settled a legal battle with the high-street chain.

Aldi has been sharing snaps on social media of trucks parked outside M&S branches which carry a billboard announcing Cuthbert's return on Monday, June 6.

Cuthbert first caused waves back in 2019 after M&S accused the supermarket's cake of being too similar to their iconic Colin The Caterpillar Cake.

Both companies have since been locked in a legal battle that has captured the attention of the UK public in what has now been dubbed the 'caterpillar wars'.

Since the ongoing legal battle, Aldi have taken cheeky swipes at M&S in a series of hilarious social media posts and even referenced the fight in their Christmas 2021 advert.

But now it looks like Cuthbert is free from caterpillar jail after the two retailer's settled their fight in April last year, which has led to Aldi announcing his return in true Aldi style.

Sharing snaps of their cheeky advertisements to social media, Aldi shoppers have been in hysterics at Aldi's sense of humour surrounding the legal fight.

In one savage swipe, they parked one of their billboards outside an M&S branch and wrote: "Where else would we announce it? #CuthBack"

Naturally, the news has went down well with fans who have loved their banter, with one commenting: "This is absolutely legendary. Well done."

"This is pure gold.... Well done Aldi", replied a second shopper.

"The Pettiness is unreal. I love it", commented a third.

"Aldi the national treasure we didn't know we needed!", said a fourth.

"I’m sure your driver didn’t plan on parking outside that specific supermarket, it was just off the cuth…", joked a fifth.

Speaking about the now infamous cake battle, an M&S spokesperson told The Retail Gazette : "The objective of the claim was to protect the IP in our Colin the Caterpillar cake and we are very pleased with the outcome".

Cuthbert the Caterpillar will return to Aldi shelves on Monday, June 6.
