A £7 face cream by Aldi has been dubbed a 'wonder dupe' for an 'almost identical' beauty product that costs a whopping £432 more. The budget supermarket's Caviar Illumination anti-age day cream (50ml) has been tried and tested and come out on top as a rip-off for La Prairie's much more expensive £439 indulgent face cream.
Reporter Alexandra Bullard of our sister publication MyLondon checked the item out herself as part of the 'Downshift Challenge' - which focuses on buying basic or own-brand products instead of paying for well-known, top brands that appear the same. She decided see if it really lives up to all the positive reviews it's been receiving, as the £7 cream has been hailed by a number of beauty bloggers on TikTok lately.
One look at the design of the supermarket's cream shows it's certainly been loosely inspired by the packaging La Prairie's £439 moisturiser. Besides remarkably similar colour palettes of silver and navy, the product shape and distinctive lids are bang-on identical - along with the word 'Caviar' popping up on both.

"Though I must stress this is purely a price comparison, I did not have the La Prairie product to compare it with." Alex wrote. However, she added: "Aldi's cream has a pure white colour, which is supposedly different from La Prairie and it's light yellow shade according to beauty bloggers. This didn't bother me as Aldi's smell was very luxurious and light."
She said a little goes a long way upon after applying the cream to her skin - perfect for not overspending. Alex then said: "I'm over the moon as this means the product will last a long time and I've not even paid a tenner for it.
"So if you want to save up on buying your family Christmas presents this year, I highly recommend downshifting your beauty products and heading to your nearest Aldi store for this wonder product. It's the Crème de la crème. But if you prefer the big brand, it might be worth waiting for the Black Friday or Boxing Day sales before you get your hands on La Prairie's Caviar cream."
