The 2025 federal election race is on, and two weeks in, there’s been plenty of announcements, backpedals, and viral moments that’s kept us on our toes. We’ve also hit that point in the campaign when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition leader Peter Dutton have the chance to share their policies and make their case for leadership in good ol’ fashioned debates.
We’ve pulled together all the deets so you know where and how you can tune in.
Why is there an election debate?
In the lead up to election date on May 3, a leaders’ debate will be a pretty key event in the campaign where the major party leaders — in this case, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader— go head-to-head to discuss their policies and vision for the country.
For voters, this marks a chance for voters to hear directly from Albanese and Dutton on what they’re proposing, see them challenge each other on important issues, and get a sense of their leadership style.

When are the leader debates?
The first debate was scheduled for April 8, 7.30pm AEST. In this one, Albanese and Dutton participated in a ‘people’s forum’, hosted by Sky News and The Daily Telegraph, and faced questions from around 100 undecided NSW voters. It was moderated by Kieran Gilbert, Sky News’ chief news anchor.
The second debate will take place on Wednesday, April 16 at 8pm, this time on ABC News.
In this one, the ABC will be deciding the topic and questions, with each leader able to make open and closing statements. This debate will be moderated by Insiders host, David Speers. Fun fact: it will be the first debate in an ABC studio since 1993.
A third debate has been announced for April 22 at 7:30 pm, by Channel Nine and A Current Affair‘s Ally Langdon, with expert questions from Charles Croucher, 2GB radio’s Deb Knight, and The Australian Financial Review‘s Phil Coorey.
This will be followed by the last leaders’ debate on April 27 at 8pm, hosted by 7News and moderated by political editor Mark Riley.
Where can you watch them?
The first debate was broadcast live on the Sky News channel, Sky News website or Daily Telegraph website.
The second debate will be broadcast live on ABC TV and live streamed on ABC iview. For radio listeners, it will also be available across ABC Local Radio, Radio National, ABC NewsRadio and on the ABC listen app.
The third debate will be live on Channel Nine, 9Now, and Stan.
The last debate before the election will be broadcast on Seven, 7plus and streamed on 7NEWS.com.au.

Will there be any more?
At the time of writing, there have been no more debates officially scheduled yet between the party leaders.
Meanwhile, a Treasurer’s debate between Jim Chalmers and shadow treasurer Angus Taylor was also scheduled for April 9 on Sky News, with a second debate slated for April 14.
Back in the last federal election in 2022 election, there were three leader debates held. But we’ll keep you posted!
