Albert Breer offers details in update on Brock Purdy throwing program

The 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy are working to get the second-year QB ready to play in time for the team’s season opener on Sept. 10. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, general manager John Lynch and Purdy have all made it clear that’s the goal. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer offered some elaboration on what the QB’s recovery from offseason elbow surgery will look like to get him under center for Week 1.

Breer’s MMQB column listed a handful of interesting takeaways from around the league with a second week of OTAs in the books. While his section on Purdy didn’t offer any Earth-shattering updates, he did dive into some specifics of how the team is getting Purdy ready.

He’s on a very controlled throwing program now, and this week’s minicamp in Santa Clara should provide more answers. As it stands? Purdy is throwing without pain, and he’s passed every test the Niners have thrown at him.

The plan going forward is to gradually increase the velocity and distance on his throws. But at this point, I’m told he’s come through the rehab process and is now building strength back in his arm, on a track that’d have him ready to go for Week 1.

Beginning on a track to return for the opener is a fine plan. There are going to be more hurdles than just ramping up the throwing program though. He’ll need to continue throwing without pain, and then be able to function confidently in the pocket during live reps.

For now though any news of progress is good for Purdy. Beginning the throwing program without pain is a good early win in his recovery.
