Alba to launch independence campaign after ScotGov paper published

Alex Salmond's Alba Party has argued that independence-backing parties need to 'unite behind their common goal'

ALBA are set to launch a renewed independence campaign following the release of the Scottish Government's first paper in a fresh prospectus for leaving the UK.

Alex Salmond's party have argued that success in a 2023 referendum will require "all independence-backing parties to unite".

The call is part of a series of resolutions to be debated at a National Council meeting of the party to be held on Sunday in Stirling.

In a motion titled “Scotland’s Independence Campaign”, Alba National Council members will be asked to commit Salmond’s party to campaign together stating that “success in the promised referendum of 2023 will require all of Scotland’s pro-independence parties and those in support of Scottish independence to unite behind our common goal of independence”.

Alba will also call on the Scottish Government to set out its strategy as to how it intends to get Westminster to agree to grant a Section 30 order - which would allow a legal referendum to take place - or explain what other plans they have in mind for "asserting the sovereignty of the Scottish people".

Constitution Secretary Angus Robertson confirmed last week that the Scottish Government intends to hold a referendum in October 2023.

But Alba want Nicola Sturgeon to reveal the exact date arguing the "energy of the independence debate of 2014 came from the setting of the date of the September 18”.

Alba Party chair Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh said: “Given the SNP/Green Coalition has fully committed itself to an independence vote in October next year they must, by definition, already have worked out the strategy for achieving this.

"The Alba view is that they should present this to an Independence Convention of Scotland’s elected representatives to rally all parts of the national movement behind this strategy.

“At our National Council, Alba’s role in the upcoming independence campaign will feature front and centre.

“Success in the promised referendum of 2023 will require all of Scotland’s pro-independence parties and those in support of Scottish independence to unite behind our common goal of independence.“
