Alarming video shows A52 swamped as flash flooding hits busy road

Flash flooding has left a major Nottinghamshire road swamped tonight (Sunday, June 18). The deluge is affecting a stretch of the A52 that was struck by heavy rain.

Conditions on the flooded road have been caught on video by a motorist. The footage shows the A52 deluged between the roundabout for the Bardills Gardens Centre near Stapleford to the Bramcote Island by the Sherwin Arms pub.

It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms covering the East Midlands, running until midnight tonight. "Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and possible road closures," the warning said.

The Met Office's forecast for the East Midlands tomorrow (Monday, June 19) says: "Clearer and brighter to start with sunny spells through the day. Showers developing from late morning onwards, potentially heavy and thundery at times, easing into the evening."

And the outlook for Tuesday to Thursday says: " Further heavy, thundery showers expected for the first couple of days, with persistent rain moving across the area Tuesday. Thursday looking dry and settled with sunny spells throughout the day."

The Met Office said some places within the yellow warning area could see around 60mm of rainfall over a six-hour period on Sunday. "However, due to the nature of these thunderstorms, some places will see much lower rainfall amounts, or even manage to avoid them altogether," it said.

Sarah Cook, national flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, said: “On Sunday afternoon and into the night, slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms could lead to localised surface water flooding across England.

“Environment Agency teams are out on the ground and will support local authorities in responding to surface water flooding. We urge people not to drive though flood water – it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.

“People should check their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up to date with the latest situation at https://www.gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding or follow @EnvAgency on Twitter for the latest flood updates.”
