Alan Thompson tips Celtic to leave Rangers firing blanks as Parkhead hero senses signature win

Celtic legend Alan Thompson is backing his former team to defeat Rangers and close in on Scottish Premiership title glory.

The 48-year-old was a star in the fixture netting nine times to offset his three red cards, as he was often front and centre on derby day.

He reckons Rangers trio Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Aaron Ramsey will cause the league leaders problems but he is backing Celtic to earn a clean sheet.

Ange Postecoglou 's side currently lead the title race by three points and boast a superior goal difference of 14 heading into their visit to Ibrox.

Thompson doesn't expect the victory to come easily for Celtic but reckons they will be the side left standing after Sunday's blockbuster.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I'm going to say 1-0 Celtic."

Thompson is acutely aware of the attacking threats that Gio van Bronckhorst has at his disposal for a side who have roared into the Europa League quarter finals.

And he believes marquee January arrival Ramsey will be hell-bent on proving his worth after a confidence boosting goal against Dundee before starring for Wales.

He added: "I think that was his first goal (against Dundee), he'll be a big player on Sunday, he's played in big games for Arsenal, Juventus and Wales.

"It will be no shock to his system, he'll be looking forward to it. Celtic will certainly have to keep an eye on him, Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos is a good player.

"Celtic will have to be switched on defensively.

"I'm going to be biased and say Celtic (have a better squad), but there's no doubt Rangers have got quality players throughout the team.

"It's going to be an intriguing game, one that I am looking forward to and I hope Celtic come out on top."

Thompson is convinced Giorgos Giakoumakis is a banker to start with the Greek striker netting five goals in his last two games.

And the Geordie has had a close-up look at the former VVV-Venlo forward this season on another day when he went on a goal rampage.

He said "I think he will start, I was up at the Dundee game and he scored three that day.

"He's in a rich vein of form, certainly the way Celtic play, they create chances, and he looks like he knows how to put the ball in the back of the net.

"He looks like is on form."

Celtic jumped to top spot after their crushing 3-0 win over their rivals in February and Thompson believes that all-action display is the masterplan for further success on Sunday.

He added: "I watched that game in February, the tempo they played with in the first 45 minutes blew Rangers away.

"I think if Celtic can go there, defend well, and play with a tempo and the high press, they can come away with the three points.

"Which would be massive."
