Alan Shearer two-word message to Callum Wilson on Newcastle United return

Alan Shearer immediately paid tribute to Callum Wilson after he marked his Newcastle United return with a goal. The current Magpies number nine had not featured since the 3-3 draw with Manchester City on August 21.

Injury troubles have plagued Wilson’s two years on Tyneside but, when fit, nobody can doubt his goalscoring ability. In a chat with Shearer last year, the 30-year-old expressed his excitement at donning the famous jersey - previously worn by the Toon legend.

“It’s such an iconic shirt for Newcastle,” Wilson told Shearer after changing his squad number. “You wore it in the past and did great things in it and it was a selling point coming to the club, having the opportunity to play in front of such a great fanbase. Being a striker, you want to wear the number nine.”

Wilson bagged his third goal of the campaign - placing him top of Newcastle’s goalscoring charts - as he eyes an England call-up. Earlier this month, he outlined his ambition to make Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for the World Cup - providing he stays fit.
