Alan Shearer tears into "shambolic" Man Utd after "embarrassment" at Brighton

Alan Shearer didn't hold back in his scathing assessment of Manchester United 's humiliating 4-0 defeat at Brighton.

The Red Devils were easily brushed aside on the south coast, putting on a "shambolic" display in front of their furious 3,000 travelling fans. The result means that United will finish a miserable season with their lowest points tally in Premier League history as they tipped over the 56 goals conceded mark, a 33-year worst.

Pundits and supporters alike lambasted Ralf Rangnick 's side for their pathetic performance, including boxing icon Tyson Fury, who called on the players to retire. Shearer followed and tore the Red Devils apart during Saturday's Match of the Day.

"They were shambolic, Manchester United, they were an embarrassment," the Newcastle legend began. "And if he hasn't already, Ralf Rangnick should get his players in tomorrow and show them the performance from Brighton. Because this is what committed footballers do for their club, their fans, for their teammates and their managers.

"They work hard, they are prepared to put a shift in, they are organised and they are committed. It should be a given, but it's not at Manchester United. "They should watch this, because these Brighton players today showed what they should do for their fans. They were magnificent, and some of the football they played was fantastic.

"They [United] are totally lost, but what are they doing on the training ground? You have to work on things, and that's what Brighton do. United were an embarrassment to their football club today."

Rangnick, overseeing his penultimate match as interim manager before Ajax boss Erik ten Hag takes this place, had no option but to apologise post-match. "To start with, it's important that we apologise to our supporters who came all the way from Manchester to Brighton," the acclaimed German coach lamented. "We were just not good enough from start to finish.

"The performance was not only poor, it was extremely poor. It was a humiliating defeat and even more so for a team like Manchester United. It's not only that you lose 4-0, it was also the way we played and this is just unacceptable, very difficult to deal with and to cope."

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes added: "They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result. A little bit of everything [went wrong]. Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in the position we are in now.

"It's something that we have to look and be embarrassed because that was not good enough from us and we have to do much better. I don't want to talk about the future, we have still one game this season and we have to win.

"I talked with the club about the future many times before I signed my contract because I think the future can be good, but obviously many things need to be fixed, as we have seen this season."

Asked about United's fans chanting "you're not fit to wear the shirt" towards the end of the game, Fernandes accepted the criticism by admitting: "I include myself in that. What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Man Utd shirt and I accept it."
