Alan Shearer sends 'lucky' Jurgen Klopp message after Liverpool win over Tottenham

Alan Shearer believes Jurgen Klopp was fortunate not to receive a red card for his emotional reaction to Liverpool's fourth and final goal versus Tottenham Hotspur yesterday afternoon.

Frustrated by an earlier sequence of play, which saw Mohamed Salah denied a free-kick after being pulled back before the visitors scored from a set-piece moments later to make the score 3-3, Klopp charged down the touchline after watching Diogo Jota slot home to break Spurs hearts.

Confronting fourth official John Brooks before racing away to his technical area, the Liverpool boss was booked for his celebration and could yet be charged by the Football Association (FA) after acting in this manner.

Sharing his thoughts on the incident on Match of the Day 2, Shearer argued Klopp could well have been dismissed for his antics. "Well, he could have easily sent Jota off, which he wasn't too quick to mention. He was lucky the way he went up to the fourth official," said the ex-Newcastle United striker.

"We know it's an emotional game, it was a bonkers game at times and emotions were running high, but it's not the first time he's done that on the touchline. So, he is lucky he has just got a yellow card."

Klopp questioned the decision-making of referee Paul Tierney after the game, before accusing the match official of saying something inappropriate when brandishing him a yellow card. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have since responded to this remark by the Reds' boss, stating: “PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his side’s fixture with Tottenham Hotspur.

"Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system and having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today’s fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager so, therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were improper.”
