Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes his club 'battered' Leeds United during the nil-nil draw on New Year's Eve but just couldn't get the better of Jesse Marsch's side. On a rainy and damp afternoon at St James' Park, the Magpies had 16 shots on goal but failed to find the net with any of them.
The point kept them third in the Premier League heading into 2023, and Shearer felt it was just 'one of those days' for his boyhood side. Speaking to BBC 5 Live, he said: "It was just one of those days for Newcastle. They sort of battered Leeds but Leeds did well defensively and relied on the goalkeeper when they had to but it was mostly one way.
"It was just one of those days where it didn't happen in front of the goal for them but well done Leeds."

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier thwarted Newcastle's attempts to end the year with a victory - saving from Chris Wood and Fabian Schar, whilst also capturing the majority of United's nine corners as Kieran Trippier's usual spot-on delivering escaped him. Leeds never looked like getting victory with nearly all of the second 45 played in the visitor's half.
A win would have seen Newcastle secure seven Premier League victories on the bounce - a feat not achieved since 1996 under Kevin Keegan. It would have also seen them go level with Manchester City in second place after Pep Guardiola's men drew with Everton.
Newcastle head into Tuesday's clash with top-of-the-table Arsenal, two points ahead of fourth-place Manchester United who have a game in hand.
