Alan Shearer's 'dreadful' Liverpool verdict as Brighton hand Newcastle United a top-four boost

Alan Shearer has blasted Liverpool for their 'dreadful' performance against Brighton. Roberto De Zerbi's side ran out 3-0 winners against Jurgen Klopp's side, with Solly March grabbing a brace in the second-half and Danny Welbeck adding a third in the dying embers of the game.

The former Newcastle United striker heaped praise on the Seagulls who moved above Liverpool into seventh place on 30 points. The Magpies have a seven point cushion over Jurgen Klopp's side in eighth, but saw their lead to Brighton cut to five points.

The result is somewhat of a boost for Eddie Howe's side, who could create further daylight between themselves and the chasing pack with a win over Fulham this weekend. The Toon ran out 4-1 winners over the Cottagers back in October and are full of confidence heading into the tie.

The same can't be said for Klopp's side, who at this stage last season, were on track for a possible quadruple. This time round, the Reds are 16 points off the Premier League summit, out of the Carabao Cup and face Wolves in an FA Cup replay next week.

Speaking at full-time following the defeat to Brighton, Shearer tweeted: "Brighton brilliant. Liverpool dreadful, all over the pitch."

Newcastle's game with Fulham will mean they've played a game more than both Liverpool and Brighton, but could move ten points clear of the Reds and eight points clear of Albion.
