Alan Shearer reflects on 'fair result' as Newcastle share spoils with West Ham

Alan Shearer says it was a fair result as Newcastle United shared the spoils with West Ham United. Callum Wilson gave the Magpies the lead just minutes after Joe Willock had his effort ruled out with ball going out of play in the build-up, before Lucas Paqueta restored parity midway through the first-half.

The Toon were unable to find their groove after taking the lead with the Hammers the better side after Eddie Howe's side took the lead. Wilson had two good opportunities to restore the advantage in the second-half but was unable to find a way past Łukasz Fabiański and Nayef Aguerd.

The result sees the Magpies drop down to fourth in the Premier League table, with Manchester United winning 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace. It means Howe's side have drawn four of their last five in top flight, but are still unbeaten since August.

Newcastle legend, Shearer, said a flat game was to be expected given the Carabao Cup semi-final highs from midweek. He tweeted: "A draw a fair result. Was always going to be a bit flat after mid week. If you can’t win, don’t get beaten!"

Supporters were in agreement with the Toon legend but were pleased to see Anthony Gordon have such a positive impact from the bench after making his debut. The new arrival replaced Allan Saint-Maximin with just over 20 minutes still to play and showed some positive signs.
