Alan Shearer picks out the Newcastle United players who most impressed against Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes the Magpies have a 'really talented player' on their hands after Bruno Guimaraes ' superb display against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Magpies registered an opening day victory over newly-promoted Forest at St James' Park courtesy of a long-range rocket from Fabian Schar and a classy finish from Callum Wilson.

It was an all-round impressive display from Newcastle but Shearer believes Guimaraes was the standout player in their Premier League opener.

"He was superb today," Shearer said on Match of the Day (6 Aug). "He wasn't the only one. I thought Willock was magnificent, Allan Saint-Maximin dragged Newcastle forward and showed his skills.

"Fabian Schar with the moment that changed the game because they were frustrated when they got into the final third but man of the match for me was Bruno."

Guimaraes became an instant hit with Newcastle supporters due to his impressive displays during the second half of last season. He has scored five times for the Magpies since completing his switch from Olympique Lyonnais in January but it is his ability to dictate play and create chances that makes him such a crucial asset.

He completed the most passes (63), created the most chances (3), completed the most dribbles (5) and won the most duels (12) in a thoroughly dominant performance.

And Shearer showered him with praise, indicating that Newcastle have a midfield orchestrator in the shape of the Brazilian international.

"The way he handles the ball under pressure and is able to ping that ball into the forward players," Shearer said. "He's so comfortable on the ball, particularly if you give him this amount of space.

"His weight of pass was superb. The way that he controlled that midfield. They got into so many good areas because of his ability.

"He never looks flustered, he always looks in control of the ball and never panics. Newcastle have got a really talented player there and the fans love him and rightly so."
