Alan Shearer on 'unstoppable' Newcastle United and clear Callum Wilson message

Former Newcastle United forward Alan Shearer was left delighted after the Magpies produced an "unstoppable" 4-0 win against Aston Villa.

While Eddie Howe's side went 1-0 up during injury time in the first half thanks to Callum Wilson, their second half performance blew Villa away.

Another goal for Wilson, coupled with strikes from Joelinton and Miguel Almiron saw the Magpies run out comfortable winners at St James' Park.

The result means Newcastle remain fourth in the Premier League table.

Had Tottenham Hotspur not scored a 93rd minute winner against Bournemouth through Rodrigo Bentancur, the Magpies would be third.

The football they are playing right now is arguably the best they have produced since the days of the entertainers.

And speaking on BBC Radio 5Live, Shearer was left impressed by Newcastle's "unstoppable" performance.

"They were sloppy in the first-half," said Shearer.

"They were giving easy passes away but once they got the penalty and Callum Wilson stuck it away really well down the middle.

"Second half, they were unstoppable down the hill towards the Gallowgate end creating chance after chance after chance."

England and Brazil managers, Gareth Southgate and Tite, were both in the stands to watch Newcastle's 4-0 drubbing of Villa.

While Tite was there to watch Bruno Guimaraes, Douglas Luiz and possibly Joelinton, Southgate will have been keeping a close eye on Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Tyrone Mings for England's World Cup squad.

And it was Wilson who produced the best performance of the England hopefuls at St James'.

While Harry Kane will start for England out in Qatar, it remains uncertain who will back-up the Spurs forward. Undoubtedly, Wilson, who has now scored six goals in nine games this season, is in the best form out of all the contenders.

And Shearer believes the Newcastle striker should be on the plane to Qatar in November as part of Southgate's squad.

Shearer added: "Two goals for Callum, one for Joelinton, the Brazil manager [Tite] was there and the England manager [Gareth Southgate] too.

"In my opinion, if Callum Wilson is fit, then he should be the one because he offers that run in behind. He's certainly the one in the box. It's a big if with his fitness.

"We know how fragile he has been in his career but if he's firing and fit, he's the one who should go for me."
